It’s been quite a while since we wrote an article about (upcoming) live action movies based on anime, comics or videogames (read the last one here). Especially considering that it seems that almost every movie released these days is based on the former. Or did the Marvel franchise just got inside our heads? Time to analyse what’s happening in the wonderful world of movies right now.
2019
It’s still 2019 and this year still has a few days left. These days usually contain a lot of highly anticipated movies because of the holidays. So… is this also true for 2019? Let us see if there are any possible blockbuster live action movies based on anime, comics or games in theaters right now.
The Joker
We all know the Joker. We know him from the DC comics, the DC cartoons and all the former Batman movies. This particular Joker is a bit different though. How? In this stand alone movie Joaquin Phoenix doesn’t just play the villain from Batman. In an Oscar worthy way the actor portrays a mentally unstable person that slowly descents into insanity. A masterpiece worth watching (if you ask me). The movie premiered a few weeks ago but is still available in many theaters. Here is the final trailer. Just in case you haven’t seen it yet.
Star Wars: the rise of Skywalker
Who doesn’t love Star Wars? Seriously who? This December Star wars: The rise of Skywalker premiered and the Skywalker saga will come to a conclusion. Will this 9th Star Wars movie bring the current trilogy to a fullfilling ending… without disrespecting the whole franchise? In other words will it leave no loose ends? I quess we will see. Leave a comment below with your thoughts. Don’t want to leave the comfort of your home? Get your dosis of Star Wars with Disney+ and watch the most adorbs creature ever in the Mandalorian a.k.a ‘baby Yoda’.
2020
Forwarding to 2020 already? We admit 2019 doesn’t have much ‘geekyness’ left when it comes to real life action movies based on comics, anime or games. So let us see what the year 2020 has to offer.
Sonic
Sonic.. oh Sonic, Sonic, Sonic.. they made you so ‘ugly’.. At first. But now you look way better. We welcome you to the real life movie universe. Hopefully you will make Sega proud. At least you have the change to be the main entertaintent during some geeky Valentine dates. Because Sonic will be released February 14, 2020. So come on Jim Carrey (a.k.a. Dr. Eggman) make it work, we need more good real live action movies based on video games.
Your Name
Do you remember the gorgeous anime Your Name released in 2016? Confession time, I cried during that movie. Yes and I am not ashamed about it. It was a beautiful love story. Apparently more people were touched by the film. Why? Because they decided to make it into a real life action movie. The anime is set in Japan but the real life action movie will be set in the United States. Not much information is available about the release date though. Guess we will just have to wait and see.
Black Widow
Most of us probably know Black Widow’s faith (if not watch Endgame). Considering the former it makes sense that the first solo Black Widow movie is a prequel. A large part of the movie is set in Russia where we can see the ‘Widow program’. And we have to admit that the teaser trailer looks awesome. If you love a lot of action, Natasha Romanoff is your girl. Black Widow is scheduled for release on May 1, 2020. Until then watch the formerly mentioned teaser trailer below. By the way did you know that the Black Widow movie will be the first movie of phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic universe? More about that later.
Birds of Prey
“And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn” is the subtitle of the upcoming DC movie starring Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. But let’s be real. The subtitle should have been the main title. This movie is all about Harley Quinn and (if you watch the official trailer) not much about the other ‘Birds’. That aside it’s still a must watch on our list. And yes we finally get to see Harley’s pet hyenas.
The new mutants
Finally something in the superhero horror genre! We hope.. The New Mutants movie was originally scheduled to be released in 2018! What happend you ask? Well scheduling problems mostly and Disney being annoying we guess. Anyways if nothing changes we can see this Marvel horror movie in April 2020. Until then watch the updated 4K trailer here.
Morbius
IF the release of the new mutants is pushed back again (and maybe again) then we can feast on another superhero ‘horror’ movie. Something to do with ‘vampirism’. Next year Jared Leto will be seen as Michael Morbius. A Marvel character who suffers from a, not so common, blood disease. In an attempt to cure himself Micheal becomes something else, something more ‘vampiry’. Ok that’s not really a word (unless you look it up in the Urban dictionary) but you know what we mean. Rumors say the movie will also feature Tom Holland as Spiderman. Will it?
Wonder Woman 1984
Hello 80’s movie, time to go retro! It is time to see Diana kick some ass again. 80’s Girl power all over. Did you know that Wonder Woman 1984 has a female director (like many other movies in this list by the way). Maybe that is why we are going to see a lot of strong female superheroes in 2020. We can’t wait!
Eternals
A race of immortals that lived on earth, look like humans but also have some awesome supernatural powers (next to the immortal part). Their purpose? Protect earth. How? with a supercast of actors of course. The film will star Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Don Lee, Lia McHugh, Kumail Nanjiani, Brian Tyree Henry, Lauren Ridloff, Richard Madden and many other actors who will at least look familiar. The Black Widow movie is the first Marvel movie of phase 4. But let’s be honest.. THIS film will be probably be recognized as the official start by many fans. The Eternals is set to be released on November 6, 2020.
Free Guy
OK. Something totally different. Did you guys see the trailer of Free Guy? A movie based on Grand Theft Auto (you know GTA)? NO? please watch it below. Some info. Ryan Reynalds plays a non playable character gone rogue. Of course this kind of role fits right up his alley.
Rumored live action movies
Akira
Almost every year we hear a rumor about remaking Akira in a real life action movie. Did you know that Warner Brothers has the rights to remake the anime since 2002? We hope they don’t though.. The latest status of the movie is that Taika Waititi is the lead director but that he put the project on hold to direct Thor: Love and thunder. Please keep directing Marvel movies Waititi, please don’t touch Akira, we beg you!
Old but worth it
Detective Pikachu
We saw Ryan Reynalds before in this list. And we think the guy is a marketing genius. Why? Just watch the following video and you will know why.
Avengers: Endgame
Avengers: Endgame is the grand conclusion to twenty-two Marvel films. It’s the end of an era, the end of phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to be precise. An end you need to (re)watch before you start phase 4. We talked about prepping for Endgame before. So in case you haven’t seen it yet, read all about how to prep for this movie right here. The majority of you probably already watched Endgame and all the previous Marvel movies leading up to this particular movie. But hey, there is nothing wrong with seeing it again right?
