A not so romantic beginning for Marjolein & Harmen.
Hello! My name is Marjolein and I’m going to tell you how I met my boyfriend Harmen. Let’s start off by saying that we met in a not so romantic way. I had broken up with my last boyfriend a while ago and decided to hit the dating market again. And as a house mouse nerd, I decided to try out Tinder. Because hey, what could go wrong, right? Sure, I met lots of weirdos, but I also met lots of cuties. And after a few months I connected with Harmen. This is where our story began. We first started texting and hit it off immediately. And after a few weeks we started dating and noticed we really liked being around each other.
Let me tell you a little more about us, before I continue with the story. Harmen a busdriver and I’m an ICT Testing Specialist. When we met Harmen had his own house in Almere and I had mine in Hilversum. We’re both PC gamers and I have a gaming laptop. Which was super handy because I just took that with me everytime I went to his place. At certain a point he even decided to get an extra desk in his game room since I was there so often. An extra desk was “just more convenient” that way. I sure didn’t mind, but must admit I was a bit surprised since we weren’t officially together (even though it did kind of feel that way).

Fast forward to a few weeks later, I was invited by Harmen to go camping with him and his family. I had only met his mum so I was really excited! See, in my mind meeting the family usually means “Hey, I like you enough to meet the people who are important to me”. Harmen seemed hesitant to start a new relationship before this happend and I had really tried not to make the relationship seem official. I mean, I didn’t want to scare him off or something. But I went on this farm-camping trip, to some place I’ve never been before, and actually had a really good time. His family was really kind! I had been so nervous, being the nerd that I am. But it turned out just fine. And shortly the trip after he asked me if I wanted to become his girlfriend. We’ve been living together ever since, together with his silly dog Noa and my grumpy cat Mao. One big nerdy family.
Just Gaming Nerd Things.
Something inevitable when you have two gamers in one house is to decide where to place your set-up. In our house we have a gameroom with our own setups: one PC with 2 screens each and one Xbox One (Yes, he got me to play on the Xbox). This is where we spend our days just having fun, playing games and watching movies. Downstairs we have another setup with the Wii U for party games with friends. We also get together with them often to play board games and just have a really great time!
We fit together perfectly because we have the same hobbies. We play World of Warcraft together, shoot at each other with nerfguns, re-live old shows by binge watching Dragonball Z, Mythbusters and other awesome shows. We collect swords together, send each other 9Gag memes all day and I can always confide in him when I’m feeling down. Really, I can’t imagine life without him! When it comes to cool guns we can totally buy bulk ammo online and it’s easier to have more fun now.
“Couples who game together, stay together!”
I often hear that people have trouble when their significant other is a video gamer. Maybe it’s because they don’t spend enough time with each other. Luckily this never happens with us. We just play together! And even if we’re not playing the same game, we still sit across from each other and talk about our day or about silly things. During our last holiday Harmen proposed to me. I couldn’t be happier right now! Some how what we have together works. So now my motto is: Couples who game together, stay together!
