Once upon a time…
You know what they say: “Couples that play together, stay together.” If that’s correct, then we are heading towards a long and happy life together. Because even our love began in-game! Well… ‘game’ might be a little exaggerated. 11 years ago when I, Joy, was 12 years old and my boyfriend Vic was 14 years old (back in the glorious MSN-age) we met each other on Habbo Hotel (Yes…I’ll wait until you’re done laughing). As two kids who did not feel any connection with the world around them, we grew closer to each other with every day we talked. We only had contact on Habbo, MSN and via e-mail, but we were both sure that we belonged together. In the Dutch theme park Duinrell we met each other for the very first time. I was on a school trip and he had convinced his two cousins that Duinrell was the place to be. In Duinrell we spent the day together. We both hardly said anything, but still had the time of our lives.
The tale of the forbidden love.
Our happiness didn’t last for very long, because our love was forbidden. Meeting your boyfriend online as a 12-year old girl was somewhat ‘not done’. In the years after that we had contact off and on (ofcourse this was done in secret). We both got into another relationship and we tried to be friends. This was incredibly hard, since we both loved each other. However, we knew that it wouldn’t be possible for us to be together, so life went on.
Eventually both our relationships ended in a period that we weren’t speaking to each other. After not hearing from each other for over a year, we saw each other again for the first time in July 2013. This time we were finally old enough to make independent decisions and both not being bound to other relationships, we finally realized we could be together after all those years.
From single player to co-op
On the 9th of September 2016 we celebrated our third anniversary, now living together in an amazing apartment in The Hague with our adopted cat. Our love came from nostalgic feelings for a big part, but Vic and I are incredibly compatible. We are both gamers, love anime, like the same music, have the same sense of humor. And we have the same morals. In our living room we have an amazing set-up. I’m betting you want to know what we keep in there. Well, here’s the list:
- 2 TV’s
- PlayStation 1, 2 and 3
- Two PlayStation 4’s
- Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox One
- Nintendo 3DS
- Two Gameboy Colours
- A PSP, and
- A book case completely filled with games.
Joy & Vic’s favorite games
Vic is an Xbox gamer converted to PS4 gamer. Some of his favorite games are Halo (even though he thinks Halo 5 stinks), Gears of War, Def Jam Fight for New York, Destiny and Elder Scrolls Online (which we play together). I myself have been a PS player for all of my life (and PC ofcourse). Some of my favorites are the Final Fantasy series (with exception of 13, 13-2 and 13-3), Kingdom Hearts, Persona (3 and 4) and the Tales of- series. I am a big lover of (J)RPG’s, with the occasional shooter on the side.
“Couples that play together, stay together.”
Next to the fact that I am now together with the person I’ve been wanting to spend my life with for the past 11 years, I am now also together with my best friend, with whom I can easily game for 12 hours a day on the couch (which I used to do on my own). And if that isn’t true love, then let me ask you this: What is?
